The car literally could not make it up the pass. Could not get up Rabbit Ears, this is just outside of town. We had an early evening flight out of Denver, left Steamboat at 6am. Last Thanksgiving the area got hit with snow and I am talking garden variety 2-3 inches on our departure day. In short, it is impossible to predict the weather, I would recommend an alternative to driving if inexperienced.

There is the free bus system and most lodging has free shuttles to the mountain and on call to take you to dinner, etc. What are your plans in Steamboat? In the winter, I don't think it is difficult to get around the area at all without a car. I would recommend a shuttle like Go Alpine and leave the driving to experienced winter drivers. There are a couple of routes from Denver to Steamboat but you must go over Rabbit Ears pass which is definitely mountain driving. In event of inclement weather these tires meet the CO state traction law which are enforced. You must check and make sure your rental has M+S tires (mud & snow).

We have encountered all weather and we are experienced winter drivers having grown up in New England and always living in places that have snow in the winter. We own a home in Steamboat- over the Christmas holiday we typically drive in from the east (currently living in Ohio), but we also fly into Denver drive up at various points during the year. And there are many mid size vehicles that handle well on snow. Ask you rental agent for decent snow car.

Transportation, once in Steamboat, is pretty easy with local buses and property shuttles. Many people park their rentals once they're here. I prefer driving 4 wd vehicles in snowy conditions, but they are not necessary for safe driving in the mountains unless you are driving in adverse conditions daily. Most important thing in winter driving is the tires.Whatever you get I'd make sure the tires are good.

if there is a snow storm the day you are driving, the smart thing to do is sit it out until it's over. roads have been mostly clear all season long. This has been a very light snow year in the state.

The roads are usually well maintained during snow events. It is actually faster to stay on I-70 until you get to Silverthorne (going thru the Eisenhower Tunnel) and then continue on CO9 to Kremmling. You do not need to go over Berthoud Pass to get to Steamboat.
